Supreme Court Orders CBI Investigation into Tamil Nadu Stampede
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court of India directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to investigate the recent stampede at actor Vijay’s TVK rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu. The court highlighted that “fair and impartial investigation is a right of the citizens.”
A three-member panel, led by retired Supreme Court judge Ajay Rastogi, has been appointed to oversee the CBI’s investigation into the incident. This decision came after an assertion from the Tamil Nadu government that the family of a victim indicated they did not initiate the petition that led to the court’s order, claiming it undermined judicial integrity. The Supreme Court responded by stating it would review the matter, specifying that its ruling is interim.
The court emphasized that the claims of the two petitioners who reported not filing the CBI inquiry request do not invalidate its order, as there are other petitions supporting the call for a CBI inquiry.
The Supreme Court noted the importance of upholding democratic rights and the necessity for a thorough investigation. It stipulated that a Special Investigative Team (SIT), consisting of the retired Supreme Court judge and two Indian Police Service (IPS) officers, will oversee the CBI’s efforts.
As the situation develops, further updates on the investigation and related incidents will be released.
