Family Claims Custodial Murder After Muslim Man Dies Following Assault in Mewat Incident

A 50-year-old Muslim man from Mewat, Haryana, has died under suspicious circumstances following an assault by two men, after which he was taken into police custody. His family has accused law enforcement of custodial murder, claiming that he was alive when detained but later died at the police station.

The death of Jameel, a resident of Luhinga village, has sparked outrage within the community. Family members and villagers allege that the police acted negligently, possibly contributing to his death. Local reports indicate that Jameel was en route to Samadhika in Rajasthan on October 8 to collect payment for work when he was attacked by a man identified as Natwar and his associates. Eyewitnesses reported that Jameel was struck on the head with a stick and bricks.

Instead of providing immediate medical attention, police officers who arrived at the scene transported Jameel to the Deeng Pahadi police station. It was several hours before he was taken to a hospital, where doctors subsequently pronounced him dead.

Following his death, villagers from Luhinga gathered at the location, demanding that a murder case under Section 302 of the IPC be filed against Natwar and others involved in the assault. They questioned the police’s actions and their failure to secure medical treatment for Jameel.

Initially, law enforcement declined to register a First Information Report (FIR), leading to a standoff as villagers insisted they would not accept Jameel’s body until a case was filed. Subsequently, around 25 villagers were detained but released later that night.

An FIR under Section 302 was eventually registered against two known individuals and three unidentified accomplices. Following a post-mortem examination, Jameel’s body was returned to his family on the evening of October 9.

Family members maintain that Jameel may have been further harmed while in police custody. “He was intercepted by two men named Natwar and one unknown assailant. They attacked him from behind with a rod. He fell, and then they struck him with a large stone. He was alive until the police arrived, according to eyewitness accounts,” said Saleem, Jameel’s brother, in a statement to Maktoob.

Saleem added, “The police denied filing a case against his killers. We only demand justice.”

Another relative, Furkan, expressed the need for justice, stating, “A case should be registered, and our relatives who are detained should be released.”

Zahida, Jameel’s wife, expressed her grief, saying, “The one who killed my husband should face consequences too. He was going to work; all his money was stolen before he was killed.”

Jameel leaves behind nine children—four daughters and five sons—with the marriages of three daughters planned for later this year.

As of now, police have not issued an official statement regarding the cause of Jameel’s death. Multiple calls to the Pahadi police station by Maktoob went unanswered.
