Perplexity has announced that its AI browser, Comet, will now be available for free worldwide, effective October 1. Initially launched at $200 per month per user for subscribers of Perplexity Max, this change aims to broaden accessibility to the platform.

The Comet AI browser incorporates an AI Assistant, which replaces the traditional operator or chatbot found in standard browsers. According to the company, users of Comet are reporting an increase in the number of questions asked, with individuals posing between six to eighteen queries daily by the second day of use. This shift in user behavior contributes to improved indexing and responses, enhancing the overall experience for Perplexity users.

In addition to desktop capabilities, the browser features a Comet for mobile version, designed to deliver a streamlined AI experience without the distractions of banner ads and pop-ups that often hinder browsing on mobile devices. “The mobile web desperately needs better AI. Banner ads and pop-ups create an even worse experience on phones than desktops,” the company stated, emphasizing the challenge posed by large tech firms in addressing these issues.

Perplexity has also introduced Comet Plus, a subscription model aimed at journalists, available for $5 a month. This service promises direct access to high-quality reporting and ensures compensation for partner publishers. Initial publishing partners in the Comet Plus offering include notable outlets such as CNN, Condé Nast, The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Fortune, Le Monde, and Le Figaro.

The announcement underscores Perplexity’s commitment to innovating the way users interact with information online.
