R Ashwin Goes Unsold in ILT20 Player Auction, Opportunities Remain

Dubai – Former Indian off-spinner R Ashwin did not attract any bids during the inaugural ILT20 player auction held in Dubai on October 1, after setting a base price of $120,000. Despite being one of the most prominent players at the event, all six franchises opted for a conservative approach, especially since Ashwin was introduced in the fifth set of the auction.

Presenter Simon Doull noted that Ashwin may have withdrawn his name from the auction after failing to secure a bid in the initial round, although some teams expressed interest in him during the accelerated bidding phase. Nevertheless, Ashwin still has an opportunity to participate in the ILT20, as two teams have yet to finalize their rosters for the 2025/26 season.

The Dubai Capitals, Gulf Giants, Sharjah Warriorz, and Abu Dhabi Knight Riders have confirmed their wildcard selections as of now, while MI Emirates and Desert Vipers still have outstanding slots. Each team is permitted to sign two players outside the auction, with an additional $250,000 allocated for these signings.

As it stands, four teams have already filled their wildcard spots. The Desert Vipers have one position remaining, having only signed Shimron Hetmyer so far. Meanwhile, MI Emirates has both of its spots available and might pursue Ashwin, given the team’s recent trajectory. The reigning ILT20 champions have similarly acquired Shakib Al Hasan but are still in need of reliable spin options, potentially making Ashwin a valuable asset.

While Ashwin was not selected, two other Indian players have secured spots in the ILT20. Dinesh Karthik has signed with the Sharjah Warriorz as a replacement for Kusal Mendis, while Piyush Chawla has joined the Abu Dhabi Knight Riders as their second wildcard pick.

Wildcard Picks for ILT20 Season 4:

  • Abu Dhabi Knight Riders: Jason Holder, Piyush Chawla
  • Desert Vipers: Shimron Hetmyer
  • Dubai Capitals: Leus du Plooy, David Willey
  • Gulf Giants: Matthew Forde, Kyle Mayers
  • Sharjah Warriorz: Tom Abell, Adil Rashid
