Netanyahu Issues Apology to Qatar for Bombing in Trump-Brokered Call

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu extended an apology to Qatar on Monday regarding a deadly airstrike that struck a residential neighborhood in Doha earlier this month. This exchange occurred during a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House. The discussion also centered around a proposed plan aimed at ceasing hostilities in Gaza.

Netanyahu’s apology pertained to the death of a Qatari citizen, Badr Al-Dosari, during an Israeli attack targeting Hamas leaders in Doha. The conversation included Trump, Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani, and Netanyahu, as noted in a statement from Qatar’s Foreign Ministry.

The airstrike on September 9, which Israel claimed was directed at a Hamas negotiating delegation, resulted in the death of Al-Dosari and incited significant outrage in Doha, termed by officials as a “flagrant violation” of its sovereignty. While the attack did not succeed in killing Hamas’s top leaders, it claimed the lives of five members of the group.

During the call, Netanyahu expressed regret and assured Sheikh Mohammed that Israel would refrain from conducting further attacks on Qatari territory. Sheikh Mohammed thanked Trump for his diplomatic involvement and emphasized Qatar’s unwavering rejection of any infringement upon its sovereignty.

Qatar has acted as a crucial mediator between Israel, Hamas, and global partners throughout the ongoing conflict in Gaza, maintaining its dedication to a diplomatic resolution.

Netanyahu, on his official X account, stated, “Mr. Prime Minister, I want you to know that Israel regrets that one of your citizens was killed in our strike. I want to assure you that Israel was targeting Hamas, not Qataris.” He also mentioned Israel’s grievances against Qatar regarding its support for the Muslim Brotherhood, representations of Israel in Al Jazeera, and backing for anti-Israel sentiment on college campuses.

On the same day, Trump outlined a 20-point plan designed to conclude the Israel-Hamas conflict and to establish governance in postwar Gaza. The plan proposes a temporary governing board led by Trump, with former British Prime Minister Tony Blair as a member. It aims for an immediate end to hostilities contingent upon acceptance by both parties without requiring the relocation of residents from Gaza.

The situation remains tense as diplomatic efforts continue.
