Zubeen Garg’s Family Seeks Detailed Investigation into His Death; SIT Takes Statements

The family of Zubeen Garg has filed a complaint with the state Criminal Investigation Department (CID), seeking a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death by drowning in Singapore on September 19. The complaint was signed by Garg’s uncle, Manoj Kumar Borthakur, along with his wife Garima and sister Palme Borthakur, and was sent via email on Saturday. “We want a thorough probe into the circumstances of his death,” Borthakur stated in remarks to the news agency PTI.

A senior police officer confirmed receipt of the complaint and indicated that it will be addressed by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the CID, which is already conducting inquiries into the events leading to Garg’s death. On Sunday, the SIT visited Garg’s home in the Kahilipara area of Guwahati to gather statements from the family. “We needed to ask certain things, and our officers met the family. Their statements are being recorded,” the officer added.

In an unrelated controversy, Tezpur University is facing criticism from its teachers’ association, which has accused Vice Chancellor Shambhu Nath Singh of significant financial irregularities. Additionally, the association condemned Singh for allegedly making disrespectful comments about Garg. This has prompted the Tezpur University Teachers’ Association to submit a memorandum to Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, calling for Singh’s resignation.

Tensions have escalated on campus following student protests against Singh’s remarks regarding Garg, leading the district administration in Sonitpur to order a magisterial probe into the matter.
