A crowd crush at a rally for prominent Indian actor-turned-politician Vijay in Tamil Nadu resulted in the deaths of at least 39 individuals and left 40 others injured, according to Chief Minister MK Stalin. The incident occurred in Karur as Vijay addressed an enthusiastic audience estimated to be in the tens of thousands. Reports indicate that a group of supporters fell while trying to draw closer to his bus, which led to the crush. Following the tragedy, Vijay expressed his condolences, stating, “My heart is shattered,” and conveyed his profound sorrow. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi labeled the incident as “deeply saddening.” This incident highlights the frequent occurrences of stampedes and crowd crushes in India, exemplified by a similar tragedy in January that resulted in the deaths of 30 during the Maha Kumbh festival, the largest religious gathering in the world.
