Indore Unites in Protest: Hindu Allies Join Against BJP MLA’s Son’s Anti-Muslim Call

A controversy has erupted in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, after Eklavya Singh Gaur, the son of BJP MLA Malini Gaur, issued a warning to local traders, urging them to dismiss their Muslim employees. This incitement has sparked protests among Muslim shopkeepers, who accuse Gaur of fueling Islamophobia.

On September 24, Muslim traders staged a silent march from Bajaj Khana Chowk to Rajbada, carrying placards that questioned, “Is being a Muslim our fault?” and “What will you gain by disrupting Hindu-Muslim unity?” Trader Mohammad Gulzar expressed, “We are Indians. We have worked here for 30–35 years, yet we are being pushed out simply for being Muslim.”

Balwant Singh Rathore, a shopkeeper, echoed these sentiments, stating that the coexistence between Hindus and Muslims should be preserved and that equal opportunities must be afforded to all. His Muslim business partner, Mohd Haroon, highlighted the integral relationship between the communities, asserting that attempts to sever these bonds could weaken the social fabric of the state.

The Seetlamata Market, which had previously been bustling with activity, appeared deserted on September 25, following reports of Hindu traders expelling Muslim retailers. Advocate Zaid Pathan, coordinator for the Association for Protection of Civil Rights in the state, noted that some Muslim traders had been summoned by police amid pressures from right-wing groups. He emphasized that while some traders supported the eviction, a majority recognized the economic interdependence between Hindu and Muslim traders.

This controversy traces back to an August 18 meeting with the Shitla Mata Market Traders’ Association, during which Eklavya Gaur allegedly stated that “Love Jihad” poses a threat to Sanatan Dharma. These remarks have prompted strong rebukes from the opposition, particularly the Congress party, which accused Gaur of attempting to create discord. City Congress president Chintu Chouksey called for an FIR to be lodged against him, arguing that such statements serve as diversions from pressing developmental issues.

Prominent cleric Mufti Juned warned that calls to remove Muslim workers could disturb community harmony and economic stability in the marketplace. He urged for cooperation and unity, stating that the dual collaboration of both communities has been key to the market’s functioning for generations.

Businessman Zahid Khan remarked on the growing trend of targeting Muslims for political gain, criticizing leaders who distract from real economic issues. He emphasized the need for solidarity among Indians to counter this divisive politics.

This incident in Indore is not an isolated occurrence; there have been multiple instances across India where calls to boycott Muslim traders have emerged, reflecting a larger trend of communal tensions within the country.
