More than 1,000 government employees are currently involved in disaster management and relief efforts in the landslide-affected areas of Wayanad district, according to a statement from Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s office on August 4.

Continuous operations are being co-coordinated from the Civil Station at Kalpetta and a temporary control room established at Chooralmala.

The government personnel are organized into 15 teams to facilitate various aspects of the response. Their responsibilities include coordinating search and rescue missions, collecting and distributing relief supplies, providing food and medical assistance, offering counseling services, managing technical teams, overseeing relief camps, and supporting landslide victims with medical needs. They are also gathering information regarding missing individuals and ensuring proper waste disposal and data management.

Additionally, specially designated teams are addressing matters related to bodies recovered from the landslide zones, which includes identification, family handovers, cremation of unclaimed remains, and documentation related to autopsies, as stated by Mr. Vijayan’s office.

Daily reports from government departments involved in disaster management and rescue operations are being submitted to the state government.
