Unified EV Charging Platform Announced by NPCI

A new initiative by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) aims to streamline the electric vehicle (EV) charging experience for users across the nation. The platform will enable EV owners to easily locate chargers, reserve charging slots, and process payments—all consolidated into a single application.

Hanif Qureshi, Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Heavy Industries, shared insights about this project during a recent conference. He noted that the initiative is currently in the advanced stages of acquiring the necessary approvals.

Qureshi highlighted a significant concern: “The challenge we’ve encountered is the overwhelming number of applications—over 100—developed by various OEMs and charging station operators. We are collaborating with NPCI to establish a framework for a unified hub. This platform will serve as an integrated interface, allowing a variety of vehicle manufacturers and charging stations to be accessed from one location. Our goal is to deliver a seamless experience for users.”

Three Core Functions of the Platform

The hub is set to include three essential functions: discovering chargers, booking charging slots, and facilitating payments. Qureshi expressed optimism that once the approvals are secured, the platform will significantly alleviate customer anxieties regarding charging availability and range.

He made these remarks at the annual convention organized by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).

Safety Standards for E-Rickshaws

In other developments, the government is considering the introduction of safety standards for e-rickshaws, akin to those used in the Bharat NCAP. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari emphasized the importance of road safety during the 7th Edition of the FICCI Road Safety Awards and Symposium. He pointed out the alarming statistic that India experiences approximately 500,000 road accidents annually, resulting in about 180,000 fatalities.

This initiative aims to enhance safety measures on the roads and contribute to a more secure driving environment.
