Shinde Sena Leaders Arrested for Hotel Vandalism Amid Kunal Kamra’s ‘Traitor’ Joke Controversy

On Monday, the Mumbai Police apprehended leaders from the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction), including Rahool Kanal and Shrikant Sarmalkar, along with several others for vandalizing Hotel UniContinental, the location where comedian Kunal Kamra’s performance was recorded in Mumbai.

An FIR was filed against the Shinde faction on Monday morning, under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Maharashtra Police Act. A significant number of Shinde Sena supporters had congregated outside the hotel on Sunday night, resulting in them ransacking the club and the surrounding hotel property.

This is also the same venue that hosted the controversial show ‘India’s Got Latent’.

What Kunal Kamra stated

In a two-minute video, Kamra reportedly made slanderous comments aimed at Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, mocking him with a altered version of a Hindi song from the film ‘Dil Toh Pagal Hai’ along with a ‘traitor’ insinuation.

Following the viral spread of this video, Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) MLA Murji Patel filed a police complaint at the MIDC Police station in Mumbai.

Kamra – a figure of controversy

This is not Kamra’s first brush with controversy, particularly of a political nature. As a stand-up comedian, he is recognized for delivering provocative jokes and barbs directed at prominent politicians and celebrities in the country.

In 2020, eight individuals filed lawsuits against Kamra for contempt of the Supreme Court. He has consistently criticized the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the judiciary, and the broader government framework in his performances.

Attorney General KK Venugopal authorized the initiation of contempt proceedings against Kamra for his tweets, describing them as being in “poor taste.”

The comedian responded, “The assertion that my tweets could undermine the foundations of the most powerful court in the world is an overestimation of my capabilities.”

The contempt proceedings against Kamra are currently pending in the Supreme Court, as stated by a lawyer involved in the case.

Political leaders respond

On Monday, Shiv Sena MP Milind Deora criticized stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra for his remarks about Maharashtra Deputy CM Shinde, labeling him a “self-made leader.”

“Ridiculing Eknath Shinde ji – a self-made leader who started from driving an auto to leading India’s second-largest state – reflects classist arrogance,” Deora expressed in a post on X.

Another Shiv Sena leader, Sanjay Nirupam pledged to take “strong action” against Kunal Kamra for his comments. “We will teach Kunal Kamra a lesson tomorrow at 11 o’clock,” he posted on X.

In response to the Kamra controversy, BJP MLA Ram Kadam remarked, “Kunal Kamra frequently uses derogatory language towards top leaders and journalists for trivial publicity. Why? Will he speak this way for anyone under the guise of freedom of expression? Eknath Shinde is the Deputy CM of Maharashtra and a former CM. Would he (Kamra) express such sentiments about him? This is an affront to the land of Maharashtra.”
