India and Indonesia are set to enhance their collaboration across several vital sectors, including defense production and supply chains, fintech, maritime affairs, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and digital public infrastructure. This announcement came from Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a meeting with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, who is on a four-day official visit to India.

The discussions on Saturday delved into a variety of economic and strategic topics, particularly focusing on boosting bilateral trade. The leaders observed the signing of multiple agreements across sectors such as culture, health, maritime security, and digital technology. Modi stated that bilateral trade between the two nations has surged in recent years, surpassing the $30 billion threshold last year, and emphasized the need to diversify market access and expand the trade portfolio.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the role of the private sector in these initiatives, welcoming the outcomes of the CEO Forum meeting that took place during the visit. Modi acknowledged Indonesia as a key ally in the ASEAN bloc and the Indo-Pacific region, affirming both countries’ commitment to upholding a rules-based order.

Subianto’s visit marks his first official trip to India as President, having assumed office in October 2024. He is set to be the chief guest at India’s 76th Republic Day celebrations on Sunday. Expressing gratitude for India’s support in Indonesia’s recent admission to the BRICS group of emerging economies, Subianto noted that this group could enhance global stability and regional cooperation.

He shared that he had open and thorough discussions with Modi, urging his team to accelerate and streamline processes to fortify their economic partnership. “We explored key sectors of mutual interest where we can enhance cooperation,” Subianto stated.

The Indonesian President’s delegation to India includes six Cabinet ministers, senior officials, and numerous business representatives. Modi pointed out that they also discussed partnerships in maritime security, cybersecurity, counter-terrorism, and de-radicalization. The recent agreement on maritime safety and security aims to bolster cooperation in crime prevention, search and rescue operations, and capacity building.

In health and food security, India will share insights from its mid-day meal scheme and Public Distribution System with Indonesia. Modi further mentioned that the two countries are committed to collaborating in energy, critical minerals, science and technology, space, and STEM education. Additionally, the Disaster Management Authorities from both nations will engage in joint exercises to enhance their preparedness for emergencies.
