Amid concerns over a recent outbreak of the Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) in China, the government of Telangana has issued an advisory urging residents to adopt precautionary measures in public spaces.

According to the Telangana Health Department, while there is no immediate cause for worry regarding hMPV, they are closely monitoring the situation in China and are in coordination with the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) in New Delhi.

Dr. Ravindra Nayak, Director of Public Health and Family Welfare in Telangana, stated, “hMPV is generally associated with common cold and flu-like symptoms. As of the issuance of this advisory, no cases of hMPV have been reported in Telangana.”

In response to the advisory, various schools and educational institutions have encouraged students to remain vigilant and to follow the guidelines provided by the State Government.

“The Health Department has reviewed the current data on respiratory infections and found no significant rise in cases from December 2024 compared to 2023. Nonetheless, as a precaution, we advise the public to adhere to specific Dos and Don’ts to safeguard themselves against respiratory infections,” he added.

To minimize the risk of infection, individuals are advised to:

  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or handkerchief when coughing or sneezing.
  • Wash your hands regularly with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid crowded areas and maintain a safe distance from those exhibiting flu symptoms.
  • Stay home if you experience fever, cough, or sneezing.
  • Drink plenty of fluids and consume a balanced diet.
  • Ensure adequate ventilation by allowing outdoor air into your living spaces.

Additionally, individuals should refrain from:

  • Shaking hands with others.
  • Reusing tissue paper or handkerchiefs.
  • Maintaining close contact with sick individuals.
  • Frequently touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Spitting in public areas.
  • Self-medicating without consulting a healthcare professional.
