Tragic Loss: Fifth Baby Dies from Cold in Gaza Winter

A tragic incident occurred in Gaza where a 20-day-old baby lost his life due to severe cold, marking the fifth fatality from hypothermia in just six days in the besieged Palestinian region.

Jumaa al-Batran passed away on Sunday while his twin brother, Ali, is currently fighting for his life in intensive care at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, as reported by Gaza’s Ministry of Health.

The twins were born prematurely and had only spent one day in the hospital nursery in Deir el-Balah. The healthcare facilities in Gaza have been overwhelmed and are functioning at limited capacity due to continuous Israeli attacks.

Their father, Yahya al-Batran, discovered Jumaa with an extremely cold head when he woke up that Sunday. Despite doctors’ instructions to keep the babies warm, it was challenging as the family lives in a tent where temperatures drop below 10 degrees Celsius at night.

Yahya expressed his despair, stating that they only have four blankets for their eight-member family. He described the harsh conditions, including the presence of dew inside the tent at night.

The lack of electricity, warm water, gas, heating, and food added to their hardships. Yahya lamented the dire situation, highlighting the suffering of his children and the indifference of others to their plight.

Residents in Gaza, including children, endure harsh living conditions, worsened by the lack of basic necessities and the ongoing Israeli bombardments. The latest freezing deaths of Palestinian infants shed light on the humanitarian crisis faced by the population.

Medical professionals in Gaza, like Ahmed Alfarra, witness numerous cases of hypothermia among infants daily. The living conditions in the makeshift tents where families reside are described as appalling and miserable.

The conflict that began in October of the previous year has ravaged Gaza, resulting in widespread destruction and loss of life. The Israeli attacks have caused immense suffering, with thousands of Palestinians killed or injured, and many more displaced from their homes.

The tragic death of Jumaa serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for international intervention to alleviate the suffering of the people in Gaza and bring an end to the cycle of violence and loss.
