To accommodate the anticipated increase in air travel demand from pilgrims attending the significant religious gathering of Maha Kumbh, the Indian government has initiated an expansion project at Prayagraj Airport, investing ₹233 crore.

The expansion, set for completion by December 31, 2024, includes a comprehensive upgrade of the existing terminal building. This renovation is expected to boost the airport’s passenger handling capacity from 350 to 850 passengers per hour.

According to reports, the enhanced terminal will be further supported by the partial opening of a new terminal, which will contribute an additional 1,200 passengers per hour in handling capacity. Together, the two terminal buildings will be able to accommodate approximately 2,050 passengers per hour by the end of 2024, with the total area of both terminals increasing from 6,500 square meters to 18,500 square meters.

Furthermore, the expansion will enhance the apron area, facilitating a larger volume of flight operations. The number of aircraft parking bays will rise significantly from 4 to 15, allowing the airport to park up to seven Airbus A320s and eight smaller aircraft, essentially doubling its operational capacity.

A new taxiway has also been constructed to expedite ground operations, and the airport is now fully equipped for night landings, enabling continuous operations. Airlines have expressed interest in increasing their flight services to and from this airport, with 14 additional flights being proposed. Currently, the airport operates 14 flights daily, and there are plans to accommodate chartered flights specifically for the Maha Kumbh visitors.

The city-side facilities have been revamped as well, with car parking capacity increasing from 200 to 600 spaces. Inside the terminal, a ‘Udan Yatri Cafe’ will be established to offer affordable refreshments to travelers.

Additionally, a cultural theme named “Triveni,” which reflects Prayagraj’s rich heritage, will be showcased through artistic displays both inside and outside the airport. Airport transfer services to the ‘Triveni’ area, the site of the Maha Kumbh, will be provided by the Uttar Pradesh government to assist passengers.

The Maha Kumbh is held every 12 years, and in 2025, it will take place from January 13 to February 26 in Prayagraj. Estimates indicate that approximately 400 million pilgrims are expected to participate in this significant event next year.
