In a recent speech in Arizona, President Donald Trump dismissed the idea that he has given up the presidency to Elon Musk, the billionaire who has been heavily involved in the transition process with the president-elect. Trump defended Musk, stating that he has not taken over as president and called the notion a “hoax” perpetuated by his political opponents.

Addressing criticisms for the first time, Trump praised Musk’s involvement but joked that Musk cannot become president because he was not born in the United States. Musk, who is originally from South Africa and currently the world’s richest person, has been a strong supporter of Trump, endorsing him before the election and contributing funds to a Political Action Committee supporting Trump.

Trump has appointed Musk to lead a proposed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which is said to focus on reducing federal government spending. The department is considered an independent advisory panel, not an official government agency.

Recently, Trump and Musk intervened to oppose a budget bill negotiated by Congress, which did not include raising the debt ceiling. The bill was ultimately revised to address concerns raised by Trump and Musk, but it did not raise the debt ceiling due to opposition from some Republican lawmakers.

Musk’s involvement in government affairs has raised concerns among Democrats, who accuse him of pushing for changes that benefit his own interests. The criticism has been fueled by memes on social media showing Trump deferential to Musk and accusations that he influenced decisions to protect his businesses in China.

Despite the controversy, some Republicans have praised Musk’s influence and involvement in negotiations. Senator Bill Hagerty commended Musk for his role in the budget deal while clarifying that Musk is not controlling Trump’s decisions.

Overall, Musk’s prominent role in the presidential transition has generated mixed reactions, with Democrats raising concerns about undue influence and Republicans acknowledging his impact on policy discussions.
