Biden pledges help after Hurricane Milton ravages Florida

President Joe Biden has vowed to continue supporting Florida communities affected by Hurricanes Milton and Helene as he assessed the storm-related damage in the southeastern US state.

In a press conference on Sunday, Biden acknowledged the devastating impact of the storms, stating that many people had lost family members and all of their personal belongings. He described the widespread flooding and power outages that affected millions of residents in Florida.

Despite Hurricane Milton not causing as much destruction as initially anticipated, it still caused significant damage, resulting in the loss of at least 18 lives and the destruction of over 100 buildings. This came on the heels of Hurricane Helene, which had made landfall in late September and caused flash flooding and strong winds across several states.

During his visit to Florida, Biden witnessed the destruction firsthand, seeing debris-filled streets and homes with damaged property. He expressed sympathy for homeowners who were dealing with the aftermath of the back-to-back storms.

Biden promised continued assistance for Florida residents, acknowledging the challenges they were facing with debris removal and power restoration. He also announced funding for Department of Energy projects to strengthen the region’s electric grid and called on lawmakers to approve more federal aid for hurricane relief efforts.

The Biden administration’s response to the hurricanes has drawn criticism from former President Donald Trump, who accused Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris of inadequate action. Harris, in turn, denounced those spreading misinformation and falsehoods about relief efforts, emphasizing the importance of community support and trust in accurate information.

Overall, the impact of Hurricanes Milton and Helene has highlighted the need for ongoing support and resources for affected communities in Florida, as they work to recover and rebuild in the aftermath of the storms.
