NEW DELHI: Preparations for the formation of a BJP government in West Bengal are underway, with the outgoing assembly expected to be dissolved shortly. Newly elected BJP MLAs are anticipated to endorse the party’s Chief Minister candidate before May 9.

Home Minister Amit Shah, who played a pivotal role in the BJP’s significant electoral victory, is slated to lead the meeting of newly elected MLAs, with Suvendu Adhikari, who defeated Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur, emerging as a leading candidate for the CM position. Sources indicate that the party is also deliberating the appointment of a deputy Chief Minister.

The dissolution of the state assembly, whose five-year term concludes on Friday, will formally end Mamata Banerjee’s tenure as Chief Minister, regardless of whether she chooses to step down. Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya stated in Kolkata that the oath-taking ceremony may occur on May 9, coinciding with Pochishe Boishakh, the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore, at the historic Maidan in Kolkata. This date aligns with the BJP’s goal of connecting with West Bengal’s cultural heritage.
