Vaibhav Sooryavanshi on verge of equalling two-decade old historic T20 record in SRH-RR IPL clash

New Delhi: 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is poised to equal a historic 20-year-old record as his team, the Rajasthan Royals (RR), prepares to face the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Monday, April 13. Recognized as the team to beat this season, RR aims to capitalize on the struggling SRH bowling attack in their matchup at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.

Sooryavanshi has delivered an impressive performance in IPL 2026, scoring 200 runs in four matches at an astonishing strike rate of 266.66, which includes two half-centuries. The teenage prodigy has notably excelled against renowned bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah and Josh Hazlewood.

The 15-year-old is on the cusp of equaling a T20 cricket milestone that predates his birth. He has the opportunity to match the record for the fastest 1000 runs in T20 history, a record that has remained unbroken since 2006. Currently held jointly by Brad Hodge and Shaun Marsh, both players achieved this milestone in 23 innings. Sooryavanshi has accumulated 901 runs in 22 innings, requiring just 99 more runs in the upcoming match to tie the record.

Brad Hodge first established this benchmark in 2006 during a match between Australia A and New Zealand A, reaching the milestone with a score of 40 runs off 29 balls. Shaun Marsh managed to match this record in 2008 during Australia’s T20I against the West Indies. While 1060 other players have surpassed 1000 runs in T20, none have done so in or before the count of 23 innings.

In the IPL clash, a formidable Rajasthan Royals squad will seek to solidify their top position against the inconsistent Sunrisers Hyderabad. RR has emerged as the most dominant team this season, securing four victories in as many matches, showcasing depth in both batting and improved bowling.

The explosive opening pair of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has been particularly effective, regularly dismantling bowling attacks during the Powerplay. Conversely, SRH has struggled with consistency despite some promising performances, currently holding sixth place on the table with three losses in four matches. The team continues to rely heavily on the aggressive batting of Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, although their performances have been erratic. Stand-in captain Ishan Kishan has also failed to build on his early-season success.
