A mosque in Tripura’s Dhalai district was allegedly desecrated in what residents and mosque authorities have described as a deliberate attempt to intimidate the local Muslim community and incite violence.

Mainama Jame Masjid, located along the Manu–Chawmanu Road, was reportedly targeted by unidentified miscreants who placed liquor bottles inside the mosque premises and attempted to set parts of the structure on fire on Thursday, December 24.

According to residents and mosque authorities, the incident came to light when the masjid imam arrived at the mosque and discovered liquor bottles inside the prayer area.

A handwritten warning note and a flag associated with Bajrang Dal were also found at the site, which locals allege was meant to intimidate Muslims in the area and spread Islamophobia.

The handwritten note, photographs of which were accessed by Maktoob, contains threatening language, including phrases such as “This is the first and last warning” and “something big is going to happen next time,” along with Hindutva slogans such as “Jai Shri Ram” and a reference to Bajrang Dal.

It reads, “Jai Shree Ram. This is the first and last warning today. Something big is going to happen next time. Bajrang Dal. Jai Shree Ram,” along with the date “25-12-2025” and the time “12:07 PM.”

The latter part of the note, written in Bengali, translates to: “This is a warning to you. Be careful and listen properly. Even a small mistake will not be forgiven/tolerated.”

Condemning the incident, the imam of Mainama Jame Masjid said the act was a calculated attempt to provoke fear and unrest.

Speaking to Maktoob, Maulana Mohammad Saiful Islam, the masjid imam, said, “Placing liquor bottles inside a mosque is a grave insult to our faith. This was not an accident, it was done intentionally to hurt religious sentiments and create tension.”

He added, “Thankfully, no one was inside the mosque when the incident took place, as we all had gone for a programme in the Panisagar area. When we returned, we realised that parts of the mosque had been set on fire, though it had been doused by then. There were Kingfisher liquor bottles, a flag with ‘Jai Shree Ram’ written on it, and a threatening note.”

“We immediately informed the police and submitted all the evidence. We appeal to the administration to identify those responsible and ensure that justice is served. Our community wants peace, but such acts threaten harmony,” the imam told Maktoob.

He further said, “Christians live in this area in the largest numbers, followed by Buddhists, Hindus and Muslims. The Christian and Buddhist populations are higher and live with harmony, love and respect with our people. But outfits like Bajrang Dal are creating enmity among people.”

Following the incident, the masjid committee submitted a written complaint to the Chawmanu Police Station. According to the complaint, the incident occurred around 12:15 pm on December 24 at Mainama Jame Masjid on the Manu–Chawmanu Road in Dhalai district of Tripura.

The complainant alleged that unidentified miscreants entered the mosque premises, placed liquor bottles inside the prayer area, and attempted to set parts of the structure on fire. The complaint said the act appeared to be a deliberate attempt to insult religious sentiments and provoke anti-Muslim tension, and urged the police to register an FIR and take strict action against those responsible.

Residents said the attempt to set the mosque on fire could have led to a major tragedy if it had not been noticed in time.

An Assistant Sub-Inspector at Chawmanu Police Station confirmed the details of the incident and the recovery of the alleged flag and threatening note to Maktoob. As of the time of filing this report, no action had been taken by the police.

“The matter is being looked into, and appropriate action will be taken against those found guilty,” the officer told Maktoob.
