The death of Indian tech professional Mohammed Nizamuddin in Santa Clara, California, has sparked significant reactions, as police characterized him as an armed aggressor, while his family contends that the police response was hasty and excessive. Locals described a domestic dispute that escalated into tragedy.

On September 3, the Santa Clara police received a call regarding a stabbing. Upon arrival, they encountered Nizamuddin allegedly armed with a knife after having attacked his roommate. Officers stated that he ignored their commands and seemed ready to attack again, which prompted them to fire their weapons, resulting in fatal injuries to Nizamuddin. Meanwhile, his roommate was hospitalized, and two knives were retrieved from the scene.

Nizamuddin’s family expressed their distress over the rapidity of the shooting. His father, Mohammad Hasanuddin, noted that they were only informed weeks after the incident, stating, “The account says the roommates had a quarrel—something about the AC or something in the room—and in the ensuing scuffle knives were involved. A neighbor phoned the police. When the police entered the room, they asked the occupants to show their hands. One boy complied; the other did not. The police then fired four rounds and the child was shot. It is extremely regrettable that, according to the reports, no proper inquiry took place and the shooting happened so quickly,” ANI reported.

The family, hailing from Telangana, has appealed to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar for assistance in repatriating Mohammed Nizamuddin’s body. The Indian consulate expressed condolences, offering “all possible consular assistance.” “We are saddened by the death of an Indian national, Mr. Mohammed Nizamuddin, in an incident involving Santa Clara Police. We are in contact with the local authorities and the family, and we will extend all possible consular assistance. Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved family during this difficult time,” the consulate stated.

Key details surrounding the incident include:

  1. Mohammed Nizamuddin, 32, who hailed from Mahabubnagar district in Telangana, moved to the United States in 2016 for higher education and had previously studied at Florida College.
  2. After securing a promotion for his performance at a private company in Florida, Nizamuddin relocated to California.
  3. His father, a retired teacher, expressed profound shock upon learning of his son’s death weeks later, only being informed on September 18 by a friend.
  4. The incident began with a dispute among roommates regarding air conditioning, leading to a violent confrontation involving knives, prompting neighbors to call the police.
  5. Responding to a 911 call reporting a stabbing, officers encountered Nizamuddin holding a knife and subsequently opened fire.
  6. Police Chief Cory Morgan defended the officers’ response, asserting that their actions likely prevented further harm, potentially saving the life of another roommate who had already been stabbed.
  7. Relatives of Nizamuddin have raised concerns regarding the lack of a thorough investigation before the police discharged their weapons, leaving the family with lingering uncertainties.
  8. Nizamuddin’s body remains at a hospital in California as his family in Mahabubnagar seeks assistance from the Indian and Telangana state governments for repatriation.
  9. Community representatives, including Majlis Bachao Tehreek leader Amjed Ullah Khan, have urged minister Jaishankar to act promptly to help return Nizamuddin’s remains to India for last rites.

The incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding police use of force and the complexities involved in cross-border repatriation of remains in such tragic circumstances.
