In a tragic incident, the wife and two minor daughters of a mosque imam were discovered murdered with a sharp-edged weapon at their residence within the mosque complex in Gangnauli, a village in Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh, on Saturday.
According to local authorities, Israna (30), the wife of Mohd Ibrahim—who serves as the imam of the main mosque in Gangnauli—along with their daughters Sofia (5) and Sumaiya (2), was found lying in pools of blood inside their home located on the premises of the mosque. The bodies were reportedly found on a cot inside the Badi Masjid complex while Ibrahim was away on work in Deoband at the time of the incident.
Residents indicated that Mohd Ibrahim, originally from Sunna in Muzaffarnagar district, had been living with his family in Gangnauli for the past four years. Israna was known to teach local children, according to information from the Times of India.
After learning of the murders, community members gathered to protest, prompting a large police presence in the area. Ibrahim expressed his bewilderment, stating, “I have no clue who could have done it. We have CCTV installed, which runs 24 hours. I had no enmity with anyone.”
Superintendent of Police Suraj Rai reported that Israna’s body was found on the floor while the bodies of the two children were on a cot. Initial investigations suggest that the victims may have died from blunt force trauma to the head, with indications that the perpetrator had access to the family. Following the discoveries, the bodies have been sent for autopsy, and the results are pending. Multiple investigative teams have been formed to solve the case.
Deputy Inspector General of Police for the Meerut Range, Kalanidhi Naithani, inspected the crime scene with other senior officials.
