Telangana to Follow Karnataka with New Hate Speech Legislation in Upcoming Budget Session

The Telangana government will introduce a law against hate speech, modelled on recently enacted legislation in Karnataka, during the upcoming Budget session, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy announced on Saturday.

Speaking at the state-organised Christmas celebrations at LB Stadium, Revanth Reddy said the proposed law would enable action against individuals making derogatory or disparaging remarks against any religion.

He said the government would study the Karnataka Act and frame similar legislation suited to Telangana’s specific requirements, reaffirming its commitment to protecting all faiths and maintaining public order.

Highlighting the significance of December, the Chief Minister said the month holds special importance for both Christians and Telangana. While December marks the birth of Jesus Christ, it also recalls the December 2009 announcement on the formation of Telangana.

He also noted that Congress leader Sonia Gandhi was born in December and said that despite the party paying a political price in undivided Andhra Pradesh for supporting statehood, she stood firm on the decision.

Revanth Reddy said his government draws inspiration from the teachings of Jesus Christ, particularly the values of love and peace. He added that although some sections attempted to create disturbances, the state government has been working consistently to ensure communal harmony and social peace.

The Chief Minister also acknowledged the contribution of Christian missionaries in education and healthcare, noting that their services have benefited people across communities.

Outlining key welfare initiatives, Revanth said women in Telangana have saved around Rs 8,500 crore under the free bus travel scheme.

He also highlighted other government programmes, including the Indiramma housing scheme, distribution of superfine rice to the poor, interest-free loans for self-help groups, a Rs 500 bonus per quintal of paddy, and free electricity up to 200 units for eligible households.
