A 29-year-old Muslim man from Telangana, India, was shot dead by Santa Clara Police in California on September 3 after an altercation with his roommates. His family claims that racial discrimination and harassment contributed to the events leading to his death, calling for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Mohammed Nizamuddin, originally from Mahbubnagar District in Telangana, arrived in the United States in 2016 to pursue a Master’s degree in Computer Science at a college in Florida. After graduating, he secured a position at a software company and subsequently relocated to Santa Clara following a promotion. At the time of his death, he was working for Google through the IT consulting firm EPAM Systems, according to his LinkedIn profile.

According to a statement from the Santa Clara Police, Nizamuddin was shot after officers found him in his residence, allegedly over the body of a roommate while armed with a knife. Police Chief Cory Morgan indicated that Nizamuddin had allegedly stabbed his roommate and failed to heed multiple warnings to stop. His family has cited a LinkedIn post in which he discussed experiencing racial harassment and has requested help from India’s External Affairs Ministry to repatriate his remains to Telangana.

In his post, Nizamuddin described himself as a victim of “racial hatred, racial discrimination, racial harassment, torture, wage-fraud, wrongful termination, and obstruction of justice.” He expressed concerns about a toxic environment while working at Google, including claims of being underpaid and wrongfully terminated.

Nizamuddin accused various individuals, including colleagues and his employer, of ongoing harassment, stating that his situation had worsened over time. He recounted facing food poisoning and eviction as he fought against what he regarded as injustice. He also mentioned being surveilled by “a purported detective.”

He named alleged aggressors and outlined a series of complaints about the treatment he received, asserting that he had not engaged in aggressive or disruptive behavior but was reacting to ongoing persecution. He presented incidents that occurred in his living situation as evidence of his claims.

Following his death, Mohammed Hasanuddin, Nizamuddin’s father, reached out to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, seeking assistance in returning his son’s remains to Mahbubnagar. Amjadullah Khan, a family representative, reported that he has reached out to Indian officials, including the local Consulate General in San Francisco, which stated it is in communication with local authorities and the family, offering possible consular assistance.

The situation remains under investigation, and officials have expressed condolences to the bereaved family during this challenging time.
