The construction of Tata Group’s semiconductor fabrication facility in the Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR), Gujarat, is projected to be finished by the second quarter of the financial year 2027-28, as communicated by the Gujarat government to the state legislature on Friday.

“Tata Semiconductor Manufacturing Pvt Ltd is currently establishing a manufacturing unit, with an estimated completion date set for the second quarter of 2027-28,” the state government stated in response to a query raised during the Question Hour. N. Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata Sons, had announced the group’s plans to construct a semiconductor fabrication plant in Dholera during the Vibrant Gujarat Summit in January 2024. Tata Electronics, a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Sons, is working in collaboration with Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) to create India’s first AI-enabled semiconductor fabrication unit, with a total investment of ₹91,000 crore.

During the ground-breaking ceremony for the Tata facility in Dholera in March 2024, Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwani Vaishnaw, predicted that the first semiconductors from the Dholera facility would be produced by December 2026. In addition, the Gujarat government informed the House that 21 memoranda of understanding (MoUs) had been signed to establish various industries in the Dholera SIR. These agreements include collaborations with Dholera Industrial City Development Ltd, Dholera International Airport Company Ltd, the National Highway Authority of India, and Torrent Power Ltd, among others.

Furthermore, the government announced that Tata Chemicals’ project to establish a unit in Dholera had been scrapped and transferred to Tata Motors, which is now building a larger facility in Sanand, near Ahmedabad. Tata Chemicals had previously intended to set up a Lithium-ion battery manufacturing unit at Dholera SIR.

In a separate statement, the Gujarat government reported that the 10th Vibrant Gujarat Summit, held in January 2024, had successfully attracted investments exceeding ₹6.95 lakh crore. “Over 98,900 MoUs were signed across 26 sectors during the last edition of the summit,” the government stated during the Question Hour. Of these, approximately 21,700 MoUs pertained to large-scale projects, while 77,000 were associated with small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). Of all the signed MoUs, around 56,500 projects have already been implemented, 13,700 are at various stages of implementation, while approximately 5,000 projects have been cancelled or withdrawn.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the summit, which was attended by heads of state from the UAE, Czech Republic, Timor Leste, and Mozambique.
