Tamil Nadu Coalition Talks: Deputy CM Position Proposed for AIADMK MLAs in Puducherry

NEW DELHI: Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) is reportedly negotiating with a faction of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) MLAs regarding a potential power-sharing deal as the political landscape in Tamil Nadu evolves. This development follows the relocation of 28 AIADMK legislators to a private resort in Puducherry, indicating potential shifts in allegiance.

The legislators at the Poorankuppam resort are allied with senior AIADMK figure CV Shanmugam. Their move has ignited speculation that certain factions within AIADMK may be contemplating support for TVK leader Vijay amid ongoing discussions about government formation, according to ANI sources.

Reports suggest that a possible arrangement could see CV Shanmugam offered the Deputy Chief Minister’s post along with important ministerial roles. Talks reportedly include former Tamil Nadu minister and TVK candidate KA Sengottaiyan.

However, the AIADMK leadership appears conflicted over the issue. General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami has reportedly rejected the prospect of backing TVK, causing rifts within the party. While leaders such as Shanmugam and OS Manian support the idea of aligning with TVK in exchange for significant positions in a potential coalition government, the party remains divided.

In addition, some senior leaders have advised TVK to consider legal avenues, possibly involving the Supreme Court or the high court, regarding the formation of the government. Others have even proposed the option of fresh elections if the impasse persists.

Despite TVK emerging as a significant contender in the Tamil Nadu assembly elections, the party still falls short of the majority by five MLAs. Vijay has obtained backing from five Congress MLAs but requires the support of five more legislators to secure a governing majority in the assembly.
