The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the Twisha Sharma death case, as reported by ANI. A bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant is expected to address the matter on Monday.

The case involves allegations of dowry harassment and abetment of suicide against Twisha’s husband, Samarth Singh, and her in-laws, including a retired district judge. Twisha Sharma, a model-turned-actor from Noida, married advocate Samarth Singh, son of retired district judge Giribala Singh, in December 2025, and subsequently relocated to the Katara Hills area of Bhopal.

Twisha was found dead at her in-laws’ residence on May 12. Following her death, her family accused her husband and in-laws of dowry harassment and abetting her suicide. An FIR was registered on May 15 against both Samarth Singh and his mother due to the alleged dowry death. In response, the police constituted a six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) on May 16 to probe the case.

As public interest in the case grew, Twisha’s family staged a brief protest outside the chief minister’s official residence on May 17 after they were denied a meeting. On May 18, a Bhopal sessions court denied Samarth Singh’s bail application, and the police announced a reward of ₹10,000 for information leading to his arrest.

On May 19, Twisha’s family called for an independent investigation, raising concerns over the police’s handling of the case and alleging a “posthumous character trial” of Twisha during media discussions by the accused. On the same day, they met with the chief minister, who pledged to seek a CBI investigation into the matter. A Bhopal court later rejected a plea for a second post-mortem examination while also increasing the reward for Samarth Singh’s arrest to ₹30,000.

Authorities subsequently issued a final notice to Giribala Singh to provide her statement, while Samarth Singh filed a new bail application. On May 22, police took Samarth Singh into custody after he arrived at the district court to surrender, as confirmed by his lawyer.
