Sri Lankan Navy saves 100 stranded Rohingya in the Indian Ocean

More than 100 Rohingya refugees from Myanmar who were stranded at sea have been rescued by the Sri Lankan navy and brought to safety in the port of Trincomalee. Among the 102 rescued individuals were 25 children, all of whom are now undergoing medical checks before being allowed to disembark.

The Rohingya, a persecuted Muslim minority in Myanmar, often risk their lives on dangerous sea journeys in search of safety. This particular group had been adrift off the coast of Sri Lanka, possibly due to recent cyclonic weather that pushed them off course. Fishermen spotted their trawler near Mullivaikkal, prompting the navy to intervene.

While it is uncommon for Rohingya refugees to make their way to Sri Lanka, it is not unheard of. In previous instances, Rohingya have landed in places like Indonesia and Bangladesh in similar situations. The ongoing conflict in Myanmar, exacerbated by a military coup in 2021, has led to a massive displacement of people, with the Rohingya facing particular hardships due to their status as non-citizens.

The recent rescue of these refugees highlights the desperate plight faced by the Rohingya community and the need for international support and intervention to address the ongoing crisis in Myanmar.
