India Vice-Captain Smriti Mandhana Reflects on T20I Defeat to England

New Delhi: After India’s defeat in the third T20I against England in Taunton on June 3, vice-captain Smriti Mandhana highlighted the need for the team to improve their ability to create pressure through dot balls. With India having initially established a stronghold at 38/3 while defending a target of 180 at the Cooper Associates County Ground, the team ultimately lost by six wickets.

“We definitely started extremely well with the ball, having them at 35 for 3. I wouldn’t take anything away from the partnership they had; they played some really good cricketing shots,” Mandhana stated in the post-match press conference. “In hindsight, we could have built more pressure with a few dot balls, which we weren’t able to do. We will analyze this game to ensure we don’t repeat these mistakes in the upcoming World Cup,” she added.

Capsey and Knight’s Key Partnership

India’s early success was attributed to Kranti Gaud and Arundhati Reddy, who helped reduce England to three wickets during the powerplay. Alice Capsey and Heather Knight then combined for a critical partnership of 137 runs, taking England to the verge of victory. Capsey scored 82 runs but was dismissed, while Knight remained unbeaten on 70, guiding her team to victory with six wickets in hand and nine balls to spare.

Positives Amidst Defeat

Despite the loss, Mandhana noted several positives, including the performance of captain Harmanpreet Kaur, who scored a vital fifty. “Harman batted amazingly well. When she is at her best, it’s a delight to watch. That innings was crucial, especially when we needed to reach 180+,” Mandhana said.

“I feel everyone is in good form. It bodes well for the World Cup that Jemi, Harman, and others are looking great. I hope to witness it from the non-striker’s end,” she concluded.
