Spot silver prices reached a record high of over $52.50 an ounce, surpassing a previous peak from an infamous 1980 attempt to corner the world market. The prices increased by as much as 0.4 percent to $52.5868 an ounce in London, breaking the January 1980 record established on a now-defunct contract managed by the Chicago Board of Trade. Notably, silver had remained one of the few markets from the commodity price spikes of the 1970s and 1980s that had not previously seen its record surpassed.
In recent data, silver has achieved new record highs in intraday spot pricing back to 1993 and has exceeded the 1980 record based on daily auction price data released by the London Bullion Market Association. It should be noted that Bloomberg was unable to acquire intraday price data for the London market for that earlier period.
