Salt, Patidar and Krunal plot MI's downfall as RCB register thumping win at Wankhede

Royal Challengers Bengaluru claimed a significant victory over the Mumbai Indians in the 20th match of the 2026 Indian Premier League on Sunday, April 11. The match, held at Wankhede Stadium, concluded with an 18-run win for RCB, showcasing a remarkable all-round performance by the defending champions.

Salt and Patidar Dominate MI Bowlers

RCB set a formidable total with an aggressive batting display. Phil Salt spearheaded the assault, while Virat Kohli played a stabilizing role. RCB notched up 71 runs in the powerplay, with Salt reaching his fifty in just eight overs, off 25 balls. Salt particularly excelled against spin bowling, hitting Mitchell Santner for three sixes and a four in one over, followed by three fours and a six against Mayank Markande in another. Salt’s innings came to an end, but Rajat Patidar continued the momentum, scoring 53 runs off 20 balls.

Kohli contributed a steady 50 runs from 38 deliveries, guiding the innings until the 15th over when he was dismissed by Hardik Pandya. Tim David joined the fray late in the innings, scoring 34 runs from just 16 balls, helping RCB reach a record total of 240 runs for three wickets. This score stands as the highest team total recorded at Wankhede Stadium in IPL history, surpassing RCB’s previous record of 235 runs against MI in 2015.

The RCB bowlers also performed admirably, with Krunal Pandya being the standout bowler, claiming one wicket for 26 runs in his four overs. His clever variations and bouncers confounded the MI batsmen, including the dismissal of Suryakumar Yadav, who fell to a well-executed delivery.

Injury Concerns for Key Players

There were injury worries for both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli during the match. Rohit exited the field in the sixth over of MI’s chase due to hamstring discomfort and sought treatment from the physio. Kohli later left the field during the second innings, with commentators reporting an ankle concern.

In MI’s response, Rohit retired hurt, and Suyash Sharma took out Ryan Rickelton and Tilak Varma in the eighth over. Although Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya aimed to rescue the innings, their efforts fell short as Suryakumar was dismissed by Krunal, and Hardik followed soon after, caught by Jacob Duffy.

Despite late efforts from Sherfane Rutherford and Mitchell Santner, MI finished significantly short of the target.

Additional Note: Concerns linger for both RCB and MI as key players Kohli and Rohit left the field during the match.
