India has found itself in a commanding position in the first Test against the West Indies, bolstered by a century partnership between Ravindra Jadeja and Dhruv Jurel in the post-lunch session. The team lost both their openers, skipper Shubman Gill in the morning session and KL Rahul shortly after he secured his 11th Test century. Jadeja made a notable impact, scoring a swift half-century off 75 balls, showcasing intent at the crease.

The left-handed batsman was particularly aggressive, hitting three fours and four sixes, which brought his career total of sixes in Tests to 79, surpassing former captain MS Dhoni. He is now closing in on Rohit Sharma, who has hit 88 sixes. Rishabh Pant leads with 90 sixes, tied with Virender Sehwag, albeit in fewer innings.

Most Sixes by Indian Batsmen in Tests

  • 90 – Rishabh Pant (in 82 innings)
  • 90 – Virender Sehwag (in 178 innings)
  • 88 – Rohit Sharma (in 116 innings)
  • 79 – Ravindra Jadeja (in 129 innings)*
  • 78 – MS Dhoni (in 144 innings)

Jadeja has shown formidable batting form, recently coming off a century and three fifties during the England tour. He commenced the home season strongly, despite not claiming any wickets in the bowling innings. Jurel, complementing Jadeja’s onslaught, remained solid, allowing Jadeja to express himself freely while playing the ball on merit.

With India extending their lead to 164 runs by tea, Jurel completed his second Test half-century. If India manages to secure another 100 runs in the final session, they may contemplate declaring, aiming to conclude the match by the third day.
