Once a soldier, always a soldier—a sentiment that resonates even with the canine members of the Indian Army.

To mark the 246th Remount Veterinary Corps Day, the Indian Army graciously transferred 12 retired military dogs to Asha Schools and benevolent individuals. These remarkable dogs, trained for specialized tasks, possess a calm demeanor and unwavering loyalty. They will continue to serve in a meaningful capacity by being adopted by schools for children with special needs and individuals across the nation, as noted by Army officials on Sunday.

During the occasion, Major General Devender Kumar, Director General of Remount Veterinary Services, shared that upon retirement, these four-legged warriors are taken to the Canine Geriatric Centre at the Remount Veterinary Corps Centre and College in Meerut Cantt. Here, they receive exceptional care, ensuring they live comfortably during their golden years.

Recently, there has been a noticeable increase in the use of indigenous dog breeds, such as the Rampur Hound, Mudhol Hound, Combai, Chippiparai, and Rajapalayam, by the Indian Army and other armed forces for essential military operations. These native breeds stand alongside well-established foreign breeds like the German Shepherd and Belgian Malinois in fulfilling various roles.

The contributions of these canine companions have been crucial in various challenging environments, showcasing bravery and resilience akin to that of true soldiers. Their roles in detecting explosives, participating in avalanche rescues, search and rescue operations, tracking, and guarding are vital to national security and humanitarian missions.

Moreover, the presence of gentle and affectionate dogs brings comfort to special needs children, helping reduce anxiety and stress. Psychologists have pointed out that trained dogs are particularly well-suited for this supportive role. According to Army sources, “the companionship of these dogs offers significant therapeutic advantages, particularly for children with special needs, aiding in the enhancement of their social, emotional, and cognitive skills.”

For families and individuals, adopting these heroic canines presents a unique chance to offer a loving home to these loyal companions who have selflessly served the country, fostering a lasting bond based on mutual affection and respect. As emphasized by Army officials, this initiative highlights their commitment to honor the valor of all soldiers—both human and canine—who have dedicated their lives to service.

This undertaking serves as a poignant reminder of the incredible connection between humans and animals, providing these brave dogs with a well-earned and fulfilling retirement, as noted by an army officer.
