Landslides and flooding triggered by heavy rainfall in Nepal have resulted in the deaths of at least 47 individuals, as reported by disaster officials. The torrential downpours, persisting since Friday, have caused rivers to overflow and inundated numerous regions throughout the Himalayan nation. In the hardest-hit eastern district of Ilam, at least 37 fatalities have been confirmed due to landslides. Local authorities noted that rescue operations have faced challenges, with many roads obstructed. Additionally, rivers in the capital, Kathmandu, have surged, flooding settlements along their banks. Security personnel have been deployed, utilizing helicopters and motorboats to support rescue efforts, as landslides have also blocked key highways and disrupted flights, leaving many travelers stranded after the recent Hindu festival of Dashain. Prime Minister Sushila Karki assured that government agencies are fully prepared for rescue and relief operations. Monsoon rains, typically occurring from June to September in South Asia, have historically caused widespread devastation, with increasing incidents of fatal floods and landslides attributed to climate change.
