PUDUCHERRY: The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has successfully retained power in Puducherry, buoyed by the charisma of All India NR Congress (AINRC) founder and Chief Minister N. Rangasamy and the government’s distribution of welfare benefits. The opposition parties failed to unite against the AINRC-BJP-AIADMK-LJK coalition, leading to confusion among voters. The Congress party’s decision to field candidates in five constituencies originally allocated to the DMK further complicated matters for party functionaries and supporters.

The NDA secured 18 seats in the 30-member assembly, with the AINRC winning 12, the BJP gaining 4, the AIADMK claiming 1, and the LJK obtaining 1 seat. In contrast, the INDIA alliance won a total of six seats, comprised of five from the DMK and one from Congress, while Independents captured three seats. Rangasamy, who successfully contested two seats, is set to make history by serving as Chief Minister for a fifth term.

Political analyst K. Murugan commented on Rangasamy’s victory, attributing it to his “Makkal mudalvar” (people’s chief minister) appeal, citing his accessibility and down-to-earth reputation. Rangasamy’s increased margin of victory in Thattanchavady, where he won by 4,441 votes, underscores his personal popularity.

Welfare initiatives, including a monthly aid of Rs 2,500 for women heads of households, free grain distribution, and increased funds under the Girl Child Protection Scheme, have also contributed to the NDA’s success. The internal discord within the INDIA bloc, coupled with a disorganized campaign and seat-sharing confusion, has diminished anti-incumbency sentiments. Attention now turns to cabinet formation, with the BJP expected to seek a deputy Chief Minister position.
