Moscow Hosts Streamlined Victory Day Parade Amid Regional Tensions and Security Concerns

Russia commemorated Victory Day with a significantly scaled-back parade in Moscow, citing concerns over potential attacks from Ukraine amidst an ongoing conflict that has persisted for over four years. This year’s May 9 celebration, which honors the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany and the loss of 27 million Soviet citizens during the war, featured no heavy military hardware such as tanks. Instead, key military assets were showcased on screens throughout Red Square, including intercontinental ballistic missiles, a new nuclear submarine, and advanced aircraft. Attendees included soldiers who have served in Ukraine and North Korean troops. President Vladimir Putin delivered an eight-minute address, emphasizing the resolve of Russian forces and asserting that they are up against an “aggressive force” backed by NATO, while expressing confidence in their eventual victory in what the Kremlin terms a “special military operation.”
