As global businesses face challenges stemming from tariff policies and geopolitical tensions, Medtronic, headquartered in Ireland, has successfully navigated these turbulent waters by maintaining an “agnostic” approach and staying informed about the changing landscape, according to a senior executive.

“We pride ourselves on being party agnostic. A 75-year-old technology firm cannot thrive unless it adapts to the ebbs and flows of the political and geopolitical environment,” stated Ken Washington, Medtronic’s Senior Vice President and Chief Technology & Innovation Officer, in an interview with businessline.

He explained that the company has established mechanisms to keep its governance and relations teams updated on the evolving geopolitical situation, allowing them to effectively manage these dynamics and still achieve success. This is particularly relevant as more governments implement inward-looking policies that could disrupt the movement of technology, research, and people across borders. The imposition of reciprocal tariffs by US President Donald Trump on products from various countries, including India, poses a significant threat to companies.

On another crucial topic in healthcare, Washington discussed the implications of Artificial Intelligence (AI), stating, “From our experience, and my professional background, AI serves as an enabler for people rather than a substitute.” He emphasized that AI is a vital component of the company’s strategy and is designed to enhance human involvement rather than replace it.

He highlighted that historically, technological innovations have always led to the creation of new job opportunities. “We believe AI will follow this trend as well. We are identifying ways AI can improve the effectiveness of minimally invasive surgical platforms. For instance, it is already streamlining colonoscopy procedures and allowing physicians to engage more meaningfully with their patients. In our cardiac rhythm division, AI helps us reduce false positives. These are just a few examples of how AI can enhance therapy, rather than displace professionals,” he elaborated.

Regarding any concerns linked to AI, Washington expressed optimism, stating, “I focus on the potential openings. We are embracing these opportunities through recruitment of exceptional talent,” citing their center in Hyderabad, which has attracted investments from the parent company.
