New Delhi: The current season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 has been tumultuous for the Punjab Kings, who were the finalists in 2025. Under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer, the team started strong and held the top position in the points table for the early weeks of the tournament.
However, their fortunes have taken a downturn, with the Punjab Kings experiencing five consecutive defeats. This alarming losing streak has seen them tumble from first place to fourth in the standings.
In light of this situation, former South African cricketer Mark Boucher has provided insights on how the Punjab Kings can regain their competitive edge and break their losing run. “The IPL is a tournament where momentum can shift very quickly; just as teams can build winning streaks, losing streaks can also take hold through small moments and missed opportunities. Punjab Kings now need to reset mentally and focus purely on playing their best cricket in the matches ahead,” Boucher stated in an interview with JioHotstar.
Boucher also discussed a pivotal moment in the recent match against the Mumbai Indians that contributed to Punjab’s defeat. He highlighted Marco Jansen’s over in the later stages of the second innings as crucial for determining the outcome. “The over from Marco Jansen was particularly significant because on this surface, the hard back-of-a-length was the most difficult ball to score off. However, he ended up bowling a bit too full and too wide. Once that over went for big runs, especially after Yuzvendra Chahal had created pressure at the other end, it became very difficult for Punjab to regain control,” Boucher elaborated.
