Advocate K.N. Jagadeesh Kumar, a lawyer at the Delhi High Court, has claimed he received threats to withdraw his complaint against Rajeev Chandrasekhar, president of the Kerala BJP, in connection with an alleged land scam involving the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB).
In his petition, Jagadeesh Kumar accused the KIADB of mismanagement in the allocation of 175 acres of farmland to BPL India Ltd. in 1995, intended for the establishment of a color television, tube, and battery manufacturing unit at Nelamangala in Dobbaspet. The land, acquired from farmers at ₹1.1 lakh per acre, was transferred to the company through a possession certificate issued in May 1995 and a registered lease deed in April 1996.
According to the petition, there was no industrial development on the site until 2004. The land was later mortgaged to the Bank of Bahrain and Kuwait with KIADB’s approval, and it was converted into an absolute sale in 2006.
Jagadeesh Kumar alleged that BPL India subsequently sold substantial portions of the allocated land to several prominent industrial entities, including 87.32 acres to Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. in February 2011 for ₹275.47 crore, 33 acres and 14 guntas to Maruti Suzuki in 2009-2010 for ₹31 crore, 3 acres and 36.83 guntas to BOC India Ltd. in 2011 for ₹4 crore, and 25 acres and 5.5 guntas to Jindal Aluminium Ltd. in 2011 for ₹33.5 crore.
In his formal appeal to Karnataka’s Commerce and Industries Minister M.B. Patil and Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda, Jagadeesh Kumar requested the establishment of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to examine the alleged extensive irregularities in KIADB’s land allotments. The complaint names BPL India, Ajit Gopal Nambiar, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Anjali Rajeev Chandrasekhar, and former minister Katta Subramanya Naidu.
Rajeev Chandrasekhar is married to Anju Chandrasekhar, the daughter of T.P.G. Nambiar, founder of the BPL Group. In response to the allegations, BPL Limited, based in Bengaluru, has strongly denied the claims and described recent media reports as “politically motivated and false,” asserting that there is no financial or official connection between Rajeev Chandrasekhar and BPL.
The petitioner also raised broader concerns regarding the functioning of the KIADB, alleging that the agency has acquired over 1.55 lakh acres of farmland over the past 55 years, with more than 70% not utilized for legitimate industrial purposes. Instead, he contended that the lands have been redirected under the guise of industrial development, contributing to extensive real estate and farmland scams.
This case emerges against a backdrop of increasing public scrutiny over KIADB’s operations, following recent farmer protests in Devanahalli against forced land acquisitions, as well as controversies surrounding caste-based land reservation policies.
