Khelo India: A Boost for Grassroots Sports in India

Introduction

The Khelo India initiative, launched by the Indian government, has emerged as a cornerstone in the country’s pursuit to discover and cultivate sporting talent from the grassroots level. As India aims to enhance its sporting prowess on a global stage, the recent increase in funding for the Khelo India programme signifies a substantial commitment to nurturing athletes and encouraging sports participation across the nation.

Budget Allocation for 2025-26

In her recent Union Budget presentation for the financial year 2025-26, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced a significant boost to the sports budget, with the Khelo India programme receiving a staggering allocation of ₹1,000 crore. This marks an increase of ₹200 crore from the previous fiscal year, where the initiative was allocated ₹800 crore. Overall, the Ministry for Youth Affairs and Sports received ₹3,794.30 crore, reflecting an increase of ₹351.98 crore overall.

Significance of the Increase

The enhanced funding is particularly notable given that the year does not feature major international sporting events like the Olympics, Commonwealth Games, or Asian Games. Yet, the government’s focus on grassroots sports underscores a long-term vision for building a robust sporting culture in India. By investing in youth potential, the Khelo India programme aims to ensure that India remains competitive in upcoming international events, including the ambitious bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games.

Development of Talent through Khelo India

Over the years, the Khelo India initiative has successfully unearthed emerging athletes from various regions of the country. The establishment of Khelo India State Centres of Excellence (KISCE) has been pivotal in providing top-notch training and resources necessary for athletes to excel. These centres have played a crucial role in identifying and nurturing talent, especially in sports that may have previously been overlooked.

The benefits of these investments are evident, as numerous athletes backed by the Khelo India programme participated in the Paris Olympics. The program not only focuses on providing infrastructure and financial assistance but also fosters a culture of sportsmanship and discipline among the youth.

Support for National Sports Federations

In addition to boosting the Khelo India programme, the government has also increased the funding for National Sports Federations. The assigned budget for assistance to these federations has risen from ₹340 crore to ₹400 crore. This additional support is essential for ensuring that various sports associations can function effectively, develop pathways for athletes, and organize national competitions to enhance the sporting ecosystem.

Conclusion

The continued investment in the Khelo India programme is a vital step towards solidifying India’s position in the global sports arena. By focusing on grassroots development and providing a robust infrastructure for training and competition, India is not only cultivating next-generation athletes but also promoting a healthy lifestyle and sports culture among its youth.

As the country prepares to push for hosting the 2036 Olympics, initiatives like Khelo India play an important role in ensuring athletes are well-equipped to perform at the highest levels of competition. The commitment to nurturing talent will undoubtedly pay off as India gears up for a brighter sporting future.

In conclusion, Khelo India stands as a testament to the government’s dedication to sports development, and its impact will be felt for generations to come. The path forward seems promising, and the entire nation is eager to witness the fruits of this investment in athletic talent.
