A 31-year-old migrant worker from Chhattisgarh, identified as Ramnarayan Bhayar, was fatally attacked by a group of local residents near Walayar in Kerala’s Palakkad district. The assault was reportedly triggered by allegations that Bhayar was a thief, with one of the attackers asking him, “are you a Bangladeshi?” according to a video of the incident.
Bhayar, a native of Bilaspur district in Chhattisgarh, was residing in Kanjikode and was attacked on Wednesday evening at Attappallam East. Authorities stated that he was targeted with the intent to inflict serious harm and suffered multiple injuries. He was transported to Palakkad District Government Hospital in critical condition, where he later died from his injuries that same night.
Local residents claimed the incident occurred around 3 PM after Bhayar allegedly attempted to burglarize several homes in the vicinity. They reported that he was injured during an altercation and that police arrived to take him to the hospital by approximately 4:30 PM.
However, Bhayar’s family refuted these claims, asserting that he was innocent, had no criminal history, and that no stolen items were found in his possession, contradicting the assertions made by his attackers, as reported by Asianet News.
In connection with the assault, police have detained five individuals and are interrogating them to ascertain their specific roles in the incident. Authorities indicated that additional arrests may follow as the investigation proceeds.
This incident has drawn comparisons to the 2018 lynching of tribal youth Madhu in Attappady, Palakkad, renewing concerns about mob violence and the targeting of vulnerable communities in the state.
