Police in Kerala on Friday took into custody the Ernakulam district general secretary of the Yuva Morcha, the BJP’s youth wing, on allegations that he assaulted his live-in partner.

Investigators said that Gopu Paramasivan and the woman had been living together in a rented house since May 2021. The incident in question took place on Thursday. While she was ironing his clothes, the woman moved his helmet from the ironing table and placed it on the floor. Police said this seemingly minor act angered Paramasivan, who then allegedly attacked her and attempted to choke her using an electric cable.

After the assault, the woman left the residence. Later, Paramasivan approached the local police with a missing-person complaint. Officers traced the woman, and on Friday, she narrated the details of the assault, according to police. Paramasivan was subsequently called to the station, where his arrest was formally recorded.

Maradu police, which falls under Kochi city limits, have charged him under several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita: Section 109(1) (attempt to murder), Section 74 (assault or use of criminal force on a woman with intent to outrage her modesty), Section 115(2) (causing hurt), and Section 118(1) (causing hurt with a dangerous weapon).

The woman told police she had been subjected to torture by the Yuva Morcha leader for the past four years. The FIR also notes that Paramasivan harboured resentment towards her over a period when she had reportedly stayed with her husband and children for nearly a week.
