Karnataka’s Health and Family Welfare Minister, Dinesh Gundu Rao, has assured residents that the state is fully equipped to manage the situation concerning Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), emphasizing that all necessary precautions are being taken to keep the situation in check.

In a statement shared on X, Rao mentioned, “Our healthcare teams are actively monitoring the condition of the affected individual to provide optimal care. I want to reassure everyone that we have the situation under control and are implementing measures to prevent any further spread.”

He confirmed that a case of HMPV has been identified in a child and indicated that additional cases may surface as more tests are conducted, stressing that this is not a new virus and that elderly individuals might also be at risk.

“While there may be other variants of HMPV, I cannot definitively say this is the first occurrence or that it has widely spread. However, it is vital for us to remain vigilant,” he added.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also spoke to the media, stating, “We will take every precaution necessary. The Health Ministry is currently in discussions, and we will act based on their recommendations.”

On Saturday, the Union Health Ministry reassured the public that there is no cause for alarm regarding the uptick in respiratory illnesses reported in China, noting that the current situation there is not out of the ordinary. The Ministry emphasized India’s preparedness to handle respiratory infections effectively.

This was communicated following a Joint Monitoring Group meeting held by the Health Ministry to evaluate the circumstances. Officials are continuously monitoring guidance from the World Health Organization (WHO) and other global agencies to remain updated on any potential threats.
