IT Sector Revenue Projected to Steady Growth of 6% Through FY27, Says Brickwork Ratings

India’s IT sector is navigating a transformative phase, moving from traditional volume-based contracts to high-value digital services driven by artificial intelligence (AI) and hyper-automation. With an estimated revenue growth of 6.1% for FY26, companies are adapting to ongoing changes while facing challenges such as margin pressures and increased investment in talent.

Shift to High-Value Digital Services

Recent findings from Brickwork Ratings indicate that India’s IT sector is experiencing a substantial structural change. The sector achieved $418 billion in services exports in FY26, reflecting its global competitiveness. The shift from low-margin, volume-based contracts to high-value digital services is being accelerated by advancements in AI and hyper-automation.

Despite a soft start to FY27, large tier-1 firms are seeing modest growth. Though this growth is modest in constant currency, the depreciation of the Indian rupee positively influences revenue figures. However, profit margins are under pressure, owing to annual salary hikes and sustained investments in skilled AI talent. Interestingly, mid-sized firms are faring better, securing consistent deal wins and seeing revenue increases attributed to AI adoption, which has helped sustain a more stable medium-term outlook for the sector.

AI Skill Development and Infrastructure

India’s edge in AI skill development is well-recognized, positioning the country at the forefront globally. The India AI Mission’s initiative to deploy over 38,000 GPUs showcases the country’s commitment to leveraging technology in driving growth. As noted by Rajeev Sharan, Head of Research at Brickwork Ratings, over 1,700 Global Capability Centers (GCCs) are effectively utilizing domestic data-center capacities and enjoying annual growth exceeding 20%.

Additionally, the recent introduction of a 15.5% common safe harbor margin for consolidated IT categories in the Union Budget 2026-27 is expected to enhance profitability. As companies absorb higher costs associated with specialized AI talent, operating margins are projected to recover, reaching an expected 21.8% in FY27 as digital investments mature and efficiency improves.

Market Concentration and Future Risks

In FY25, significant geographical concentration risks were identified, with the US and Europe accounting for 52.9% and 32.8% of IT spending, respectively. This highlights the ongoing dependency on Western markets and could pose a challenge in the face of any geopolitical tensions or economic downturns in these regions.

However, rapid adoption of AI necessitates continuous investment in skills to mitigate the risk of skill obsolescence among professionals. This underscores the importance for IT firms in India to focus on upskilling their workforce to keep pace with international standards and emerging technologies.

What This Means

The ongoing transition in India’s IT sector highlights the essential evolution from traditional practices to innovative solutions fueled by AI. For Indian businesses, this shift can present opportunities for competitive advantage. However, the pressure on margins and the necessity for continued investment in talent could challenge profitability in the short to medium term. Firms need to adopt agile business strategies, emphasize talent development, and explore new markets to ensure sustainable growth.
