Iran Seizes Two Vessels, Including Gujarat-Bound Ship, Near Hormuz Strait

Iran seized two vessels on Wednesday in the Strait of Hormuz, amidst escalating tensions related to the ongoing confrontation between Tehran and the Trump administration. One of the seized ships was reportedly bound for Gujarat, India. This incident follows an earlier occurrence where Iranian forces fired on an India-bound vessel attempting to navigate through the critical waterway, resulting in its swift turnaround.

State media in Iran reported that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) took custody of the vessels, which have been identified as the MSC Francesca and the Epaminondas. As of now, the owners of the ships have not been reachable for comment, according to the Associated Press. Marine traffic data indicates that the Epaminondas, a container ship registered under the Liberian flag, was en route to Mundra port in Gujarat’s Kachch district and was marked as “stopped.”

These events signal a notable escalation in Iran’s approach, reflecting a more hardened stance from its leadership following previous diplomatic engagements with the Trump administration that ultimately collapsed into conflict. Despite a ceasefire attempted by Pakistan earlier in the day, tensions around this vital oil passage remain elevated due to ongoing U.S. sanctions and restrictions imposed by the IRGC navy.
