  • OpenAI launches ChatGPT Gov for U.S. governmental entities
  • Features akin to ChatGPT Enterprise, with enhanced security measures
  • Utilizes GPT-4, delivering advanced functionalities tailored for government applications

OpenAI has unveiled ChatGPT Gov, a tailored iteration of ChatGPT aimed at providing U.S. governmental agencies with access to OpenAI’s cutting-edge models. In a recent blog entry, the organization announced its intention to roll out ChatGPT to the government, aiming to ensure that artificial intelligence is utilized in a manner that promotes national interests and public welfare, in harmony with democratic principles. The objective is to empower policymakers to judiciously incorporate these technologies and enhance services for citizens.

OpenAI indicated that U.S. government agencies can utilize ChatGPT Gov within their own Microsoft Azure commercial cloud environments, granting them access to numerous features and capabilities comparable to ChatGPT Enterprise, including custom GPTs. The firm highlighted that ChatGPT Gov enables agencies to retain authority over security, privacy, and compliance, adhering to rigorous cybersecurity standards such as IL5, CJIS, ITAR, and FedRAMP High. This setup is also designed to facilitate quicker internal approvals for the utilization of OpenAI’s tools with sensitive, non-public information.

Resembles ChatGPT Enterprise

OpenAI explicated several features of ChatGPT Gov in its blog post, noting that many of these align with those of ChatGPT Enterprise, albeit with improved security measures. The company stated that government personnel can securely save and share discussions within a protected workspace, in addition to uploading text and image files. Powered by the esteemed GPT-4 model, the platform also permits employees to craft and share custom GPTs within their secure setting.

This launch follows the substantial adoption of OpenAI’s AI solutions across various tiers of government. The organization reported that over 90,000 government workers have engaged with ChatGPT, generating upwards of 18 million prompts for tasks such as document translation, policy memo drafting, code creation, and application development.

Furthermore, OpenAI is striving to secure FedRAMP accreditation for ChatGPT Enterprise—the foundational element for ChatGPT Gov—to guarantee compliance with the strict security standards necessary for government utilization.
