India’s new greenfield airport, Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMI), is set to establish air connectivity with Tamil Nadu starting December 29, 2025. IndiGo Airlines will launch direct and daily flights from both Chennai and Coimbatore.
An aviation source revealed that the services will utilize 186-seat all-economy class Airbus A320 aircraft and will operate within the initial operational hours of the airport, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Full 24-hour operations are expected to commence by February 2026.
Navi Mumbai International Airport represents a response to the operational challenges posed by high air traffic at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. The new flights to NMI are anticipated to provide additional options for air passengers. Currently, IndiGo operates nine daily flights between Chennai and Mumbai, as well as three daily flights from Coimbatore to the same destination.
In a competitive landscape featuring Air India, IndiGo will be the first airline to offer direct flights to NMI from Tamil Nadu. The Chennai service is strategically aimed at business travelers, featuring flights 6E 898/899. The outbound flight will depart Chennai at 6:10 a.m., with the return flight leaving NMI at 7:40 p.m. For Coimbatore, flights will operate as follows: flight 6E 860 will leave NMI at 9 a.m. and arrive in Coimbatore at 10:45 a.m., while flight 6E 861 will depart Coimbatore at 11:15 a.m.
This development is anticipated to enhance air travel options in the region and contribute significantly to the local economy.
