India Sets New T20 Record Against Namibia Thanks to Ishan Kishan and Samson

New Delhi:

India faced Namibia in the 18th match of the ongoing T20 World Cup at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Thursday. The hosts registered their biggest win in the mega event, beating the opposition by 93 runs. Notably, they weren’t at their best with the bat and even then, they posted 209 runs in their 20 overs. In the process, the men in blue also broke the all-time T20 World Cup record, thanks to a stunning start from Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson.

Even though India scored 209 runs, one felt they fell at least 20-25 runs short with the way they had started. Samson and Kishan opened the innings and blazed their way to 22 off 8 and 61 off 24, respectively, to help the team’s score touch the 100-run mark in just 6.5 overs. With this effort, India registered the fastest-ever team 100 in the history of the T20 World Cup.

The Netherlands held this record earlier, having scored 100 runs in just seven overs against Ireland back in 2014, while India did so one ball earlier. During this mayhem, Kishan also brought up his fifty within the powerplay overs, becoming only the fifth batter after Stephan Myburgh, Litton Das, Rohit Sharma, and KL Rahul to do so.

Kishan opens up on making the most of powerplay overs

After the match, Ishan Kishan noted that all the Indian batters at the top of the order are in good touch and that it is a ploy to attack the bowlers in the powerplay overs. He also went on to say that the players are not swinging their bat wildly at anything and pointed out that India were cautious to start with as Namibia’s Ruben Trumpelmann bowled a brilliant first over.

“We all are in good touch and we are all looking to use the powerplay as much as we can and we are selecting the bowlers. If you see in the first over, Trumpelmann, he bowled few balls pretty well. So we did not take charge because we knew later on once the ball stops swinging, maybe we can go for extra 10 runs in the over instead of scoring 15 we can go for 24 or something. So that was the plan,” Kishan said after the match in the post-match press conference.
