New Delhi: As the Indian team prepares for a three-match ODI series against Australia, speculation surrounding the international futures of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma has intensified. With two years remaining until the 2027 ODI World Cup, reports suggest that the veterans may contemplate retirement following the Australia series. However, both players showcased their prowess during the initial ODIs of the South Africa series, effectively quelling criticisms.

Kohli delivered back-to-back centuries, while Rohit contributed with 57 runs in the first ODI in Ranchi. Their performances have seemingly solidified their positions within the 50-over format. In light of these developments, former India international Harbhajan Singh expressed concerns over perceived decision-making patterns regarding player selections, referencing his own experiences during his career.

“It is beyond our understanding,” Harbhajan remarked in a conversation with PTI. “I may not be able to answer because I have been a player myself, and what I have observed has happened to me as well. It is unfortunate that we do not discuss such matters openly.” Harbhajan alluded to a trend of dropping experienced players without clear justification.

He further commented on the qualifications of those making decisions about player futures, stating, “It’s unfortunate that those who have not achieved much are the ones deciding about their future. They have always been great players for India. I’m delighted for Kohli and Rohit as they continue to perform strongly and set an example for the younger generation on what it means to be champions.”
