Shabana Azmi: A Journey through Struggle and Success in Bollywood

New Delhi: Renowned Bollywood actress Shabana Azmi has established herself as a prominent figure in the Indian film industry, garnering acclaim for her performances and her choice of socially relevant films. However, her journey has been marked by considerable challenges since her early years.

Born on September 18, 1950, in Hyderabad, Shabana is the daughter of celebrated poet Kaifi Azmi and actress Shaukat Azmi. Growing up in an artistic environment, she was introduced to literature and the arts from a young age. Demonstrating remarkable independence, Shabana refused to be a financial burden to her family. Before attending college, she worked at a petrol station selling coffee, earning just 30 rupees a day for three months. This dedication to self-reliance paved her path to success.

Shabana made her Bollywood debut in 1974 with Shyam Benegal’s film Ankur, where she portrayed a maid who becomes pregnant. Her performance was compelling enough to earn her the first of many accolades, including a National Award. This film marked the beginning of a successful career, during which she deftly navigated both arthouse and mainstream cinema, tackling significant themes related to women’s issues in films like Arth, Khandhar, Par, and Godmother.

Over her career, Shabana Azmi has achieved considerable recognition, winning five National Film Awards as well as multiple Filmfare Awards. Her dedication and profound acting skills have secured her a distinguished status in Indian cinema.

In her personal life, Shabana married lyricist and composer Javed Akhtar in 1984 after he divorced his first wife. Their relationship is characterized by mutual respect and understanding. Despite not becoming a mother, Shabana has embraced Javed’s children, Joya and Farhan Akhtar, as if they were her own.

Shabana has faced significant personal challenges, including two suicide attempts during her childhood, as revealed in her mother’s autobiography. Despite these struggles, she has consistently drawn on her resilience and passion for her craft. Her strength and commitment have made her a respected and inspiring figure in Bollywood. Recently, in July 2023, she appeared in Karan Johar’s film Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani.
